The introduction of the Lapeyre Automatic Shrimp Peeling Machine in 1949 revolutionized the Louisiana shrimp industry. Each machine was capable of peeling approximately one thousand pounds of shrimp per hour—comparable to the collective output of approximately 150 experienced human peelers.
